Train-The-Trainer Workshops for School Nurses

The Next Workshop - December 3-4, 2005

The third train-the-trainer workshop will be held in Scottsdale, Arizona. The purpose of the workshop is to prepare School Nurse Leaders to replicate an educational program entitled School Nurses Responding to the Challenges of Foodborne Illnesses. Trainers will learn food safety basics, epidemiology and pathophysiology of foodborne illness, and the role of the school nurse in prevention, early detection, and management of foodborne illness. Contact Andrea Brassard, Project Manager for more information.

April 30-May 1, 2005

The second Train-the-Trainer workshop was conducted in Atlanta, GA at the Center for Disease Control/Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC/DASH) headquarters. Led by Elaine Brainerd and Debbie Lao Regalario, ANF/FSS project with Elizabeth Bugden, from Kids First, RI., this also was an opportunity for CDC/DASH staff (Carol Hamilton, David DeLozier, and Daniel Dater) to participate in and observe the training of school nurses for Food Safe Schools.Elaine Brainerd, Carol Hamilton, and Leo Schargorodski

Nine school nurse leaders attended. Participant evaluations of the workshop were overwhelmingly positive. Each trainee developed a plan for replication of the workshop with local school nurses during the coming school year. Initial plans for replication indicate that 1,168 school nurses will be attending FSS workshops. In addition, 525 school administrators, certified staff and food service staff will be introduced to the Food-Safe Schools initiative.

March 6-7, 2004

The Food-Safe Schools (FSS) Project at the American Nurses Foundation conducted a School Nurse Train-the-Trainer workshop on March 6-7, 2004 in Washington, DC. Thirteen school nurses were selected to attend and replicate the workshop titled, "School Nurses Responding to the Challenges of Foodborne Illnesses" as instructors at the state and local level.

Nurses in work groups discuss case scenarios
Practical strategies were presented to improve the school nurses’ skills in prevention, early detection and management of foodborne illnesses in schools. Activities in the workshop include conducting a focused nursing assessment for a suspected foodborne illness, establishing school – community collaboration and responding to real-life scenarios. The workshop was well received and trainers plan to replicate the workshop in 13 states or districts in the next year.

The workshop was led by FSS project director, Elaine Brainerd, and co-presenters; Elizabeth Bugden, Kids First, RI and Linda Caldart-Olson, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Presenters from CDC Food-Safety Partners included, Julie Skolmowski, American School Food Service Association/Child Nutrition Foundation (ASFSA/CNF) and Tom Dickey, National Environmental Health Association (NEHA).
